Student Reflection and Academic Development
1. What is your full name, and how would you introduce yourself as a RAR-Institute student?
My name is Sefayet Ullah, and I am a Semester Three student in the Diploma in Academic Research Studies at RAR Institute. I am interested in academic learning, research, education, and community development. Since joining the Institute, I have gained valuable learning experiences and opportunities to strengthen my academic and professional skills. I aim to continue learning and use my knowledge to support my community and contribute positively to society.
2. What is your Student ID, and which programme are you currently studying at RAR Institute?
My Student ID is 523091. I am enrolled in the Diploma in Academic Research Studies and am currently in Semester Three. Through this programme, I have developed knowledge of research methodology, academic writing, literature reviews, referencing, data collection, data analysis, and research ethics.
3. What is your educational background before joining RAR Institute?
Before joining RAR Institute, I completed Grade 12 at Basic Education Community High School, Pyin Nya Shwe Pyi, during the 2024–2025 academic year. After graduation, I wanted to continue my education and develop the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed for further opportunities. Because my understanding of academic research was limited, I chose this diploma to build a stronger foundation in research and academic learning.
4. When did you join RAR Institute, and what motivated you to begin your studies?
I joined RAR Institute on 5 July 2025. I was motivated by the desire to continue my education after Grade 12 and improve my academic and research skills. I wanted to understand how research is planned and conducted and how academic knowledge can help explain real-world issues. I also hoped to strengthen my writing, communication, critical-thinking, and presentation skills.
5. What were your academic knowledge, confidence, and skills like before joining RAR Institute?
Before joining RAR Institute, I had limited knowledge of research methodology, research questions and objectives, literature reviews, data collection, and data analysis. I was also less confident in academic writing, presentations, and speaking in front of others. Organising my ideas and expressing them clearly could be difficult. I recognised that these skills could improve through learning and practice, which encouraged me to join the programme.
6. What challenges did you face when you first started your studies at RAR Institute?
At the beginning, many research concepts were unfamiliar to me. Academic writing, referencing, literature reviews, and research methodology were particularly challenging. I sometimes found it difficult to interpret assignments and organise my ideas. Managing study time and participating in presentations or academic discussions were also challenges. I worked to overcome them by reading, practising, attending classes, asking questions, and learning from feedback.
7. How have your academic confidence and participation developed since joining RAR Institute?
My academic confidence has improved since joining RAR Institute. Initially, I was sometimes hesitant to speak or share my ideas in class. I now participate more actively in discussions, presentations, group activities, and academic tasks. I am more comfortable asking questions when I need clarification and explaining my ideas to instructors and classmates. Regular assignments and presentations have helped me become more confident.
8. What important knowledge and skills have you gained from your programme?
The diploma has helped me develop knowledge of research methods and design, data collection and analysis, academic writing, referencing, literature reviews, research questions and objectives, and research ethics. I have also learned how to identify a research problem and develop a suitable research topic. In addition, I have strengthened my critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, time management, and presentation skills.
9. How has the programme improved your understanding of research methodology and academic research?
The programme has strengthened my understanding of the stages of a research project, from identifying a problem and developing a topic to formulating research questions and objectives, reviewing literature, selecting appropriate methods, collecting and analysing information, and presenting findings. I have learned that research methods should be selected in line with the research topic and objectives. I now understand research as a systematic process rather than simply gathering information.
10. How has your academic writing, referencing, critical thinking, and research skills developed?
My academic writing has become clearer, more organised, and more structured. I have learned to develop ideas logically and support arguments with relevant information. I better understand the importance of accurate referencing and acknowledging original sources. My critical-thinking skills have also developed, and I try to examine information carefully rather than accepting every claim without question. Through assignments and research activities, I have practised identifying key information and comparing ideas.
11. How has your ability to search for, evaluate, and use academic sources improved?
I have improved my ability to search for sources relevant to a research topic. I understand that not every source is reliable or useful, so I consider its relevance, credibility, and reliability before using it. I have also learned to compare information across sources and identify material that best supports my research. Properly referencing the ideas of others has become an important part of my academic practice.
12. What have you learned through assignments, presentations, examinations, research projects, and classroom activities?
Assignments have encouraged me to study independently and organise information. Presentations have strengthened my communication and public-speaking confidence, while examinations have helped me practise preparation and time management. Research activities have shown me how academic knowledge can be applied to real-world issues. Group activities have also improved my cooperation, listening, communication, and teamwork skills.
13. How have RAR Institute instructors and designated course instructors supported and guided your academic development?
Instructors at RAR Institute have supported my academic development through teaching, explanations, feedback, assignments, discussions, and guidance. When research concepts were difficult to understand, their explanations helped clarify the material. Their feedback has helped me recognise mistakes and improve my work. They have encouraged me to ask questions, participate in discussions, complete assignments, and develop my own ideas. This support has strengthened my confidence and motivated me to continue learning.
14. Which instructor, course, lesson, or academic activity has had the greatest positive impact on your development, and why?
My instructor, H.E Dr. Kaisayr Husein, along with the professors and course instructors who have taught and guided me, has contributed positively to my learning. Research Methodology has had a particularly strong impact on my academic development. The course helped me understand research topics, questions, objectives, literature reviews, methodology, data collection, and analysis. The explanations and guidance I received increased my confidence in approaching research topics more independently and strengthened my interest in academic research.
15. How have your communication, presentation, public-speaking, teamwork, and leadership skills improved?
My communication and presentation skills have improved through classroom discussions, presentations, and academic activities. I used to feel nervous when speaking in front of others, but I now feel more comfortable expressing my ideas and presenting information. I have learned to listen carefully and respond respectfully to other viewpoints. Group activities have strengthened my ability to share responsibilities and work towards common goals. These experiences have also helped me develop responsibility and leadership skills.
16. What major academic achievement, milestone, or personal improvement have you experienced since joining RAR Institute?
One of my main achievements has been gaining greater confidence in academic research and writing. I am now better able to prepare research topics, questions, objectives, literature reviews, and methodology sections than I was at the beginning of the programme. Completing assignments and presentations has also been an important milestone. I have become more willing to ask questions and share ideas while developing my critical thinking, communication, time management, and teamwork skills.
17. How has your education at RAR Institute influenced your future academic, career, and community goals?
My education at RAR Institute has encouraged me to continue pursuing higher education and develop a future career related to research, education, and community development. I want to strengthen my research and academic skills so that I can contribute to meaningful research. I also hope to use my education to support young people and my community. My long-term goal is to promote learning opportunities and contribute positively to society.
18. What has been the most important change in your academic confidence since joining RAR Institute?
The most important change has been becoming more confident in my ability to learn and engage with academic research. I am more willing to ask questions, share ideas, complete academic tasks, and present information. Although I still have more to learn, I now feel better prepared to approach unfamiliar topics and improve my work through practice and feedback.
19. How has your experience at RAR Institute prepared you for higher education?
My experience at RAR Institute has helped me develop foundational skills that are important for higher education, including academic writing, referencing, literature reviews, research methodology, critical thinking, independent learning, and time management. I have gained a clearer understanding of how to identify a research problem, use relevant academic sources, and organise information. These skills provide a useful foundation for further study and future research.
20. Looking back from the day you joined RAR Institute until today, how would you describe your overall academic, personal, and professional development?
Looking back on my journey since joining RAR Institute on 5 July 2025, I believe I have made meaningful progress.
