Questions and Answers
1. How would you introduce yourself as a student of RAR Institute?
My name is Mohammed Younus, and I am pursuing the Diploma in Academic Research Studies at the Rohingya Academic Research Institute (RAR Institute). As a Rohingya student living in a refugee camp, accessing higher education has been a significant challenge. RAR Institute has provided me with an important opportunity to continue my academic journey and develop skills in research, critical thinking, academic writing, and communication. I consider RAR more than an educational institution; it is a place where I am building the foundation for my future and preparing myself to contribute positively to my community.
2. What is your Student ID, and which programme are you currently studying?
My Student ID is 523075, according to my original response. I am currently enrolled in the Diploma in Academic Research Studies at the Rohingya Academic Research Institute. This programme is helping me develop the academic knowledge, research skills, and critical perspective needed for further learning and future professional opportunities.
3. What was your educational background before joining RAR Institute?
Before joining RAR Institute, I completed my secondary education in 2024. Although I had completed this stage of my education, I remained determined to continue learning and pursue further academic opportunities. I wanted to expand my knowledge, improve my abilities, and prepare myself for a future in which I could make a meaningful contribution to society.
4. When did you join RAR Institute, and what motivated you to continue your studies?
I joined RAR Institute on 20 April 2025. My main motivation was the belief that my education should not end after secondary school. I wanted to strengthen my academic foundation, develop new skills, and create better opportunities for my future. The achievements of students from RAR Institute’s first batch also inspired me. Their confidence, communication abilities, research knowledge, and academic progress encouraged me to believe that I could follow a similar path. Seeing their development motivated me to take the next step in my own educational journey.
5. How would you describe your academic knowledge and confidence before joining RAR Institute?
Before joining RAR, my understanding of academic research was limited. I had some basic academic knowledge, but I was unfamiliar with many aspects of research methodology, academic writing, and proper referencing. I also needed to improve my confidence in expressing ideas and participating in academic discussions. Since joining the programme, I have gradually developed a stronger understanding of these areas. I can now approach academic tasks with greater confidence, organise my ideas more effectively, and participate more actively in learning activities.
6. What challenges did you experience when you first began your studies?
At the beginning, I found academic research and writing difficult because many concepts and methods were unfamiliar to me. I also struggled with time management, academic requirements, and the correct use of citations and references. However, these difficulties became opportunities to learn. Through regular practice, assignments, classroom activities, and guidance from my instructors, I gradually improved my understanding. This experience has taught me that academic progress requires patience, discipline, and a willingness to learn from mistakes.
7. How has your confidence and classroom participation changed since joining RAR Institute?
My confidence has developed considerably since I began studying at RAR. Previously, I sometimes hesitated to ask questions, answer in class, or share my opinions with others. With time and regular participation, I became more comfortable expressing my thoughts and engaging in academic discussions.
I have learned that asking questions and making mistakes are natural parts of the learning process. This change has helped me become a more active learner who is increasingly willing to communicate, exchange ideas, and participate in academic activities.
8. What important knowledge and skills have you gained through the Diploma in Academic Research Studies?
The programme has introduced me to several important areas of academic research, including research methodology, literature reviews, academic writing, referencing, qualitative and quantitative research, data collection, research ethics, and critical thinking. One of my most valuable lessons has been understanding the importance of evidence-based conclusions. I have learned that research should be conducted systematically and that arguments should be supported by reliable information rather than personal assumptions alone.
9. How has the programme improved your understanding of research methodology?
Before enrolling at RAR, I had little practical knowledge of how academic research is designed and conducted. Through the diploma programme, I have developed a better understanding of research questions, participant selection, interviews, data collection, qualitative and quantitative approaches, secondary research, and the appropriate use of citations. I have also become more aware of the need to minimise bias and follow ethical principles when conducting research. These lessons have changed how I approach questions and evaluate information, helping me understand research as a systematic process rather than simply gathering facts.
10. How has your academic writing, referencing, and critical-thinking abilities developed?
My academic writing has become more organized and clearer. I have learned to examine arguments, assess the quality of information, identify supporting evidence, and present ideas in a more logical way. I have also improved my understanding of referencing and citation, which are essential for acknowledging sources and maintaining academic integrity. These developments have encouraged me to approach information more carefully and become a more independent and responsible learner.
11. How has your ability to find and evaluate academic sources improved?
My studies have taught me that collecting information is not enough; it is also necessary to evaluate whether that information is credible, relevant, and reliable. I now pay greater attention to the quality and purpose of a source before using it in academic work. Working with academic articles, books, research reports, and other materials has helped me become more selective when gathering evidence. I have also learned to use relevant sources to support my arguments and strengthen the quality of my research.
12. What have you learned from assignments, presentations, examinations, and classroom activities?
Each learning activity has contributed to my development in a different way. Assignments have strengthened my research and writing abilities, while presentations have helped me communicate ideas more confidently. Classroom discussions have encouraged me to listen to different perspectives, think critically, and respond thoughtfully. Examinations and research-related tasks have also taught me the importance of preparation, time management, and consistent effort. Together, these experiences have helped me connect theoretical knowledge with practical academic skills.
13. How have RAR Institute’s instructors and academic mentors supported your development?
The instructors and academic mentors at RAR Institute have played an important role in my learning journey. Their explanations, feedback, and encouragement have helped me understand challenging concepts and identify areas where I need further improvement. I am particularly grateful to Sayama Shwe Yi, Dr. Mohammed Hashimru, and Professor Dr. Wendell Glenn P. Cagape, along with other contributing instructors and scholars whose academic guidance supports students’ development. Their teaching and encouragement have reinforced the importance of discipline, academic integrity, and continuous learning. I also appreciate the academic leadership and guidance of Kaisayr Husein, whose commitment to research education has encouraged students like me to continue pursuing our academic goals despite difficult circumstances.
14. Which instructor or academic experience has had the greatest influence on your development, and why?
My instructor Kaisayr Husein has had a particularly meaningful influence on my academic journey. His dedication, experience, and continued encouragement have helped me recognise the value of education and take my responsibilities as a student more seriously. His guidance has influenced not only my understanding of academic research but also the way I think about my future. When students feel tired or discouraged, encouragement from a committed academic mentor can make a real difference. His emphasis on quality education has motivated me to remain focused, improve my abilities, and work towards a meaningful future. I am also thankful to all my instructors and professors whose teaching, feedback, and academic support have contributed to my progress.
15. How have your communication, presentation, teamwork, and leadership skills improved?
Through presentations, classroom discussions, workshops, and collaborative activities, I have become more confident in communicating with others. I am now more comfortable sharing my ideas and speaking in front of a group than I was when I first joined the programme.
Working with fellow students has also taught me the importance of cooperation, listening, mutual respect, and shared responsibility. These experiences have helped me develop skills that are valuable not only in academic settings but also in future professional and community activities.
16. What academic achievement or personal milestone are you most proud of?
One of my most significant achievements has been my improved academic performance, particularly my strong results in semester examinations. These results reflect the effort, persistence, and commitment I have invested in my studies. Beyond examination results, I consider my growing confidence and improved research abilities to be equally important achievements. I have progressed from having limited knowledge of academic research to approaching research tasks with greater understanding and confidence. This progress encourages me to continue learning and set higher goals for myself.
17. How has your education at RAR Institute influenced your future goals?
My education at RAR Institute has strengthened my ambition to become a researcher and writer, particularly in the study and documentation of Rohingya history and experiences. I believe that preserving our history through credible research is important for future generations and for a deeper understanding of our community. Much of the existing documentation about Rohingya experiences has been produced by external scholars, researchers, and observers. I hope to contribute to a new generation of Rohingya scholars who can document their community’s history, experiences, and perspectives through careful, evidence-based research.
RAR Institute has helped me develop the knowledge, confidence, and sense of responsibility needed to pursue this ambition. In the future, I also hope to contribute to educational development and encourage other Rohingya students to continue learning despite the barriers they face.
18. Looking back on your journey, how would you describe your overall academic and personal development?
Looking back to the time before I joined RAR Institute, I can see meaningful changes in my knowledge, confidence, and outlook on life. I once had limited experience with research methodology and academic writing. Today, I have a better understanding of how to conduct research systematically, evaluate sources, analyse evidence, organise academic arguments, and communicate ideas effectively. My development has extended beyond academic skills. RAR has encouraged me to think more seriously about my future, remain committed to lifelong learning, and recognise my potential to contribute to society. I now see myself as an emerging researcher with a responsibility to continue learning and use knowledge constructively.
My journey has taught me that education is not simply about obtaining a qualification. It is about building understanding, strengthening confidence, developing responsibility, and creating opportunities to make a meaningful difference.
