RAR Institute Statement on the 8th Anniversary of the Rohingya Genocide

As the world marks eight painful years since the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar, we, the RAR Institute- a Rohingya scholars–led research institute- stand in solemn remembrance of the genocide victims and in unwavering solidarity with the survivors. Despite countless promises and international attention, justice and accountability remain out of reach.

Key Points of Our Statement

  • Eight Years of Injustice: No concrete accountability has been achieved for the mass atrocities and war crime that began in 2017.
  • Justice Delayed is Justice Denied: International mechanisms, including the ICJ, ICC, and Argentina’s Universal Jurisdiction case, have made progress but failed to deliver justice to date.
  • Perpetrators Still Free: Myanmar’s military leaders responsible for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity remain unpunished.
  • A Future in Limbo: More than one million Rohingya remain stateless and trapped in refugee camps with no certainty, no safety, and no hope for a dignified life.
  • No Repatriation in Sight: Safe, voluntary, and dignified return to Rakhine State remains a distant dream.
  • RAR Institute’s Commitment: As a Rohingya scholars–led Research institute, we document, research, and advocate for justice and the restoration of rights for our people.
  • Global Community Must Act: We urge the UN Security Council, ASEAN, OIC, and the wider international community to move beyond statements and implement binding actions to end impunity.
  • Call for Accountability: The perpetrators of genocide must face international and national courts without delay.
  • Justice, Citizenship, and Reparations: True justice for the Rohingya means full citizenship restoration, reparations, and guarantees of non-recurrence.
  • Recommendation:
We call on the international community, UN bodies, and other Human Rights organizations to take concrete measures to end impunity, ensure accountability of perpetrators, provide reparations, restore citizenship, and guarantee safe, dignified repatriation for the Rohingya. Immediate and sustained action is essential to uphold justice and protect the rights of our people.
